a “portrait” of King Tuff I took in Santa Ana

We (I) did this interview with (aka Kyle Thomas) about five years ago (five years = six months) and forgot about it because I am an under-achiever who perennially and subconsciously fucks up in order to avoid dealing with actual, true failure…wait, what was I talking about? Oh yeah, King Tuff, and how he makes the kind of irreverent, catchy, distortion-filled music that despite its best efforts can’t hide what’s really under all that flip and smart-aleck (I made that word up just go with it): lovely and imperfect human emotion. Or I’m full of shit (in addition to the things listed above).  Anais Nin once said “We don’t see things as they are, we see things as we are”, but she can suck it.

It’s depressing that you can’t hear the incredibly drawn-out molasses that is Kyle’s voice, but I tried to remain true to all the looming, ruminating pauses. Here’s the interview:

1. What is your life motto?

I just always try… to look for…the magic in… everything.

2. Who is your muse?

It always changes…umm..I’m… looking for a muse right now.

3. So, you’re in between muses. What is your idea of abject misery?

(Long long pause) I don’t know what that means.

3a. Like, total misery. It’s just a fancy word for it because I’m an asshole.

(laughs) Total misery…probably… not being able to be… creative in any way. That would be… really miserable.

4. What is your idea of total happiness?

I think, like… a log cabin… with some windows… and books and plants… and stuff…

4a. Are there any animals there?

No pets… but there would definitely be animals, like…around.

5. What is the best quality in a woman?

Tomboyish-ness.

6. What is the best quality in a man?

Probably some sort of femininity (chuckles).

7. Draw a self-portrait:

You can follow King Tuff on and catch him in LA at The Echo with Lovely Bad Things and tomorrow night at The Eagle Rock Community Center with Audacity.
