Apologies to all rom coms, but not all relationships walk the straight line of normalcy. Some zig-zag and some loop and some spin round and round, like a merry go round (if you are bright, you will see where I am going with this). Not everyone gets why someone would want to deal with all the twists and turns but as far as I’m concerned those stomach-wrenching-roller-coaster heart drops remind you that you’re alive, and without that, you would just lay on the floor forever. (You = me). That being said, it’s actually unsettling how much The Coathangers get me. (More unsettling maybe is the time I tried to sneak into their van and go on tour with them as their tambourine player, but that’s neither here nor there). I feel their girl-power screeching party punk melodies in the deepest caverns of my soul, and their lyrics resonate deeply with the voices inside my head (case in point: “Hey, I like you/Go away” which is a thought I think far more often than any well-adjusted person probably should).
With their most recent single “Merry Go Round”, they made a song that sounds the way a kind of demented, happily dysfunctional, knowingly fleeting relationship feels: frenetic and manic and sexual and totally, completely awake. Because yeah, it probably won’t last and yeah it makes no sense but fucked up as it is, it was still worth it in the (inevitable and undoubtedly painful) end.
Here’s the video for the song, featuring some of my most favorite things ever: creepy masks, trippy visuals, and of course, the ever adorable Coathangers.
Now here is a still of Stephanie being the cutest, just because:
