It’s October! Which, for us, means slutty witches and witchy stuff and those candy corn earrings that look deceivingly edible but aren’t and probably a catsuit or two. Anyhow, it’s not quite Halloween yet, but tonight’s Johnny Vampotna “Ghost Noir” opening at Slow Culture Gallery is a great way to get into the spirit of…spirits, actually. According to our friends at Slow Culture, “Ghost Noir is a tribute to an encounter with an apparition the artist experienced inside the infamously haunted Los Angeles Ambassador Hotel. The incident has since inspired themes of the metaphysical both as a personal hobby and muse for his artwork. From roses to reapers, he investigates both the uncharted territory of the afterlife and the mundane beauty of daily rituals. Old fashioned tattoo methods fused with occult style motifs inspire this body of work to invoke a timeless feeling of American Gothic tradition.” What we’re taking from that is tattoos + art + ghost stuff + a lot of attractive sleeved guys, and we like it.
Jonny Vampotna is currently a tattooer at Silverlake’s American Electric Tattoo. “Ghost Noir” is his first solo exhibition, and explores new mediums outside of ink on skin, including photography, water color, oil painting, and installation. Stop by the opening tonight in Highland Park from 7-10PM. Free PBR and people watching.
