Cash Machine Group Art Show Opens Tonight – Interview With The Curators
by Yasi Salek on Apr 2, 2015 • 12:43 pm No CommentsHere’s what you need to know about Cash Machine, a group art show opening tonight at FatherSons gallery in Los Angeles:
1. I have a piece in it.
2. But do not let that deter you, as so do many many very talented artists, such as the Hass Brothers, Audrey Wollen, Tofer Chin, Zoe Zag, and more.
3. All the work is anonymous.
4. All the work is $99.99.
5. It’s going to be awesome.
Here’s a brief interview with curators Dan Monick, Aaron Freshour, Delia Sweeney, and Pascale Georgiev.
What made you want to make the show anonymous?
Dan: We love the idea of buying something because you just love it vs its prospective value because of who made it. Its also interesting to see what people make when they don’t have their name attached to it. There is a freedom to it but also its seems to be something people wrestle with. Also we think it will help introduce viewers to new artists, or to artists they may already know.
Aaron: I love the idea that we can be introducing viewers to art or to what art can be to artist viewer or cat… essentially experience.
Delia: Challenging the viewer to not go after something because of a name or reputation was what I thought would be a fun experiment. Our contributors have all been so generous knowing that it is a universal price that is much lower than what their work normally goes for, so why not even the playing field further and have people go with their gut reaction to the work.
Pascale: Agreed
And what’s with the number $99? Is that some mind trick shit to convince people they aren’t actually paying $100 (for a piece of art that could be worth thousands)?
Dan: Ummmmmmm its $99.99.
Aaron: duh
Delia: Total mind fuck.
Pascale: Agreed
Will this be a one time event or will you be doing similarly structured group shows at Father/Sons in the future?
Dan: Hopefully it will stay a store permanently. The group show is an idea we love but also a test run for the concept as a permanent installation. We have a couple of ideas for future shows in a similar vein either here or at other possible spaces. Ps it’s FatherSons. Is this thing on?
What is your favorite thing to buy in a bodega besides porn you creepy pervs?
Dan: More porn.
Aaron: porn and chips…. in bed
Delia: Caffeine
Pascale: Agreed
Love,
Cash Machine
